TOM NYLUND'S STORAGE, FINLAND

Storage for an active life

Tom Nylund is a Finnish influencer and outdoor enthusiast with a YouTube channel where the main focus is on mountain biking, along with running and skiing. Tom needed a space where he could store all his bulky equipment, for maintenace and fixing and be able to do his filming. When the opportunity arose for Tom to rent a garage for his exclusive use, Elfa was used for a storage solution tailored to meet his needs.

Tom had a system based on storing things in plastic boxes with lids, writing the contents on a strip of tape and sticking it onto the box. Although this system worked, it still presented a problem. The boxes were all stacked on one another, which meant it was a hassle every time he needed to get something from one of the boxes furthest down. Tom needed an unoccupied wall as background for filming, strong shelves that could hold heavy boxes, and a flexible system that let him move things around quickly storing his gear according to the season. It was also important to be able to hang his bikes on the wall because they cannot be stacked on top of one another as that damages them.

Everything in its place

With McLaren's Formula 1 garage as inspiration, Tom now has a space where everything has its place. Skis are stored on bracket posts furthest up, his boxes sit on wire shelves, bikes are hung on the wall, tools can be found on storing boards with a mix of different hooks and boxes and clothes, gloves and other gear are kept in airy pull-out mesh drawers.

A dynamic system

When asked what Tom is particuallary pleased with, he said: “Most definitely the flexibility of Elfa’s system. Ordinary wooden shelves are not as flexible. The Elfa system is extremely practical and it doesn’t take many minutes to adjust anything in here. And it takes no time at all to lift my bikes down from Elfa’s special bike hooks. I’d say that my Elfa storage system is quite dynamic and not static.”
